The Interpretation and Translation Facility

The CSD’s ‘Interpretation and Translation Facility’ has been supporting all kinds of different events and activities that help build relationships between civil society organisations in Turkey and counterparts in the EU. The support has been given on an ‘in-kind’ basis, with an average value of around 4,000 euros, to more than 50 organisations for dialoguing activities in Turkey and at locations in the EU.

Most of the support was in the form of simultaneous interpretation, between Turkish and languages of the EU, at events ranging from, for example, a conference for environmentalists with inputs from a German NGO, to a symposium run by NGO ‘Kaos’ to explore gay rights issues in the EU context, to a gathering organised by the Istanbul Textile and Drapery Exporters Union to discuss issues from the textile industry with counterparts from similar organisations in the EU, to a workshop in which Turkey’s Diabetic Nursing Association participated with colleagues from Europe. Activities in Member States made possible with support from the Facility included French-Turkish interpretation for delegates from Turkish CSOs participating in a cultural heritage event in Paris, and Dutch-Turkish interpretation for a group from a disabled organisation in Gaziantep making a partnership visit to Holland. The Facility has also, on a limited basis, helped CSOs improve their contacts and present their mission statements by providing translation of materials for workshops, web pages, and project preparation..

Civil Society Dialogue Project Promoted in Germany

There is already a vibrant Turkish element to many communities in Germany and so to build on these synergies the CSD Team is delighted to work with the Centre for Studies on Turkey - a research NGO based within Essen University - to share experiences from the CSD grant projects and promote future opportunities. To this end, the CSD Team held a press conference in Essen on June 23, 2009, in cooperation with the Centre, to meet with the Turkish origin civil society organisations in Germany and the Turkish Media broadcasting in Germany.

Deren Doğan Yavuz, EUSG Senior Programme Officer; Didem Oflaz, Communication, Coordination & Networking Expert; and Tuna Çağlar Dik, Monitoring Expert gave important information about the support for NGOs all around Turkey within the scope of “Promotion of Civil Society Dialogue between EU and Turkey,” networking with potential project partners in European Union, and on Civil Society Dialogue Project-II which is the next grant opportunity, and the Interpretation / Translation Facilities. The press conference drew great interest in Germany, generating a number of news stories. To reach the media outputs of the conference, please click on the link below.

Technical Assistance for the Promotion of Civil Society Dialogue between EU and Turkey
What is Civil Society Dialogue ?
Over decades Turkey and the EU have already established numerous contacts at political, economic, professional, cultural and educational level. The Civil Society Dialogue makes Turkey better known within the EU, and allows Turkish citizens to understand more about the EU, its values and policies.
At the same time, the dialogue assists citizens in being more involved in political, cultural and economic development - thus boosting the emergence of a vigorous civil society in countries that accede to the EU.

One of the main objectives of the European Union is ensuring peaceful and harmonious coexistence of European societies. The Civil Society Dialogue Project has been developed to contribute the preparation of Turkish society for membership and to bring Turkish society closer to Member States' societies in the framework of common values, by creating opportunities for closer cooperation and interaction in various fields.

Ambassador Oğuz Demiralp
the Secretary General of the EUSG

"There are wide differences in the mutual perceptions between Turkey and the EU in the context of the accession negotiations.
The EU and Turkey need to understand each other better. This is why the EU calls upon civil society organisations in the EU and Turkey to help build this understanding through dialogue and increasing mutual ties."
Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to Turkey
Marc Pierini,
Ankara, 24 January, 2007
